Hey people I started my droid building journey with a 3d printer and after going to droidcon last year (2024) I was blown away by the scavanger legs and ankles so I started with those and the drives love how the turned out. But didn't want 3d printed greebels at that point but didn't want to pay astronomical prices for greebels either so I've turned to attempting metal casting. You don't always get perfect parts but they look great to me.
To get start you only really need a couple things (1) a smelter (2) a flask a frame to put sand in to hold the shape you're making (3) sand specifically casting sand you can make your own or buy pre made sand its just sand and oil so it's sticky and holds shape (4) small items baby powder a bucket, borax for impurity removal some pliers for small crucible or actual pouring tools for bigger crucibles (5) safety equipment a apron and goggles.
I know that seems like alot but you can get most of it fairly reasonably i can link some of what I have below. I believe I got most of it for close to 400-500$ but in comparison to parts you buy that's only 1 or 2 items cncd I believe it's extremely worth it and can be used for any other non droid related parts as well.
Any questions are welcome i would love Builders to turn to casting its a extremely fun and rewarding process.
